Can’t Install The Mojave On An External Drive?

When you are trying to install the macOS Mojave on your Mac device, you will receive an error mentioning, “This disk is used for Time Machine backups.” If you can’t install the Mojave on an external drive, proceed with the steps below to fix the issue.

  • Try connecting the external drive to a Thunderbolt dock on your Mac device.
  • Restart your computer and check whether the Mojave installation starts automatically.
  • Go to the Apple menu and select the System Preferences option from the list.
  • Navigate to the Time Machine section and click on the Select Disk option in the Time Machine window to view the active disk for Time Machine Backup.
  • Change the active disk and try again installing the Mojave update.
  • Click the Launchpad icon on the Dock.
  • Go to Utilities and select the Disk Utility option from the list.
  • Choose your external drive and click the Erase icon on the top of the window.
  • Enter a name for your drive and select the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) option as Format. Then, click on the Erase button.
  • Now, launch the Mojave installer and select the Show All Disks option.
  • Select your external drive, which will have the name you gave. Then, click the Right arrow icon mentioning Install.
  • If you don’t have the Mojave installer, download it from the App Store.
  • When prompted to enter the password of your Mac device, type your password and click Add Helper.

Can’t Install The Mojave On An External Drive
  • Select your Wi-Fi network from the list and enter the network password.
  • Enter your details to create a computer account and click Continue.
  • Once the Mac device is setup, click the System Preferences icon on the Dock.
  • Select the Startup Disk folder and select the drive you want to start your Mac.
