Method 1 – Wipe a WD external hard drive on a Windows computer

Step 1

  • Get a USB cable and connect its one end to a WD external hard drive.
  • Plug the cable’s other end into your Windows computer’s USB port.

Step 2 

Press the Win and E keys to launch File Explorer on the computer.

Step 3

  • Click the This PC tab in the left panel.
  • Now, locate your WD external hard drive and right-click it.
  • Choose the Format option.

Step 4

  • Select the NTFS option from the File System drop-down menu.
  • Navigate to the Format options section and select the Quick Format checkbox.
  • Click the Start button in the Format window.

Step 5

  • If a warning message appears, select the OK option. This will wipe the WD external hard drive.
  • Wait until you see the Format Complete message.
  • To close the Formatting dialog box, click the OK button.

Method 2 – Wipe a WD external hard drive on a Mac computer

Step 1

First, connect your WD external hard drive to a Mac computer.

Step 2

  • On the home screen of the Mac computer, click the magnifying icon at the top. Enter disk utility and select the same from the search result.
  • Alternatively, launch the Applications folder and click the Disk Utility application. 

Step 3

  • When the Disk Utility window opens, select your WD external hard drive in the left panel.
  • Click the Erase button at the top.

Step 4

  • Type your drive name in the Name field.
  • Choose the MS-DOT (FAT) option from the Format drop-down menu.
  • Click the Erase button at the bottom.

Step 5

Now, this will start wiping the WD external hard drive. Once done, click the eject icon next to your drive and then remove the drive from the computer.
