How To Boot From External Optical Drive

When you want to troubleshoot your computer or install a new OS, you may have to boot from an external optical drive. To do this, carry out the simple instructions given on this page.

Windows

The steps given here will help you to boot a Windows computer from an optical drive.

Step 1

  • Disconnect all other drives, memory cards, and printers from the computer.
  • Connect your external optical drive to the computer.

Step 2

  • Restart the Windows computer.

Step 3

  • To access the Boot menu, press the F12 key (Dell) on the keyboard while the computer boots.
  • Note: This key varies depending on the computer.
  • Here are the key combinations to access the Boot menu if you are using other computer models.
  • Acer – Esc, F12, or F9.
  • Asus – F8 or Esc
  • Compaq – Esc or F9
  • eMachines – F12
  • HP – Esc or F9
  • Lenovo – F8, F10, or F12
  • Samsung – Esc, F12, or F2
  • Toshiba – F12
  • Wait until you see the Boot menu on the screen.

Step 4

  • Select the external optical drive that you have connected to the computer.
  • Press the Enter key on the keyboard.
  • This will boot your computer from the external optical drive.

Mac

If you wish to boot your Mac computer from an optical drive, then you can use a Startup disk or the Startup Manager.

Method 1 – Using Startup Disk

Step 1

  • Make sure to connect your external optical drive to the Mac computer.

Step 2

  • On the home screen of the Mac computer, click the Apple logo at the top.
  • Choose the System Preferences option.
  • Click the Startup Disk option.

Step 3

  • Navigate to the lock icon and click it.
  • Provide the Mac administrator password correctly.

Step 4

  • Select your drive and click the Restart option. This will boot the Mac computer from the external optical drive.

Method 2 – Using Startup Manager

Step 1

  • Reboot your Mac computer.
  • As soon as the computer starts, press the Option key.
  • Release the Option key once the Startup Manager window appears.

Step 2

  • A list of available drives will appear on the screen.
  • Select the name of your external optical drive.
  • Press the Return key on the keyboard.
  • The computer will start to boot from the external optical drive.
